Meet Zachary Wyatt. He is a new editor for the Sucarnochee Review. I've asked him to tell us who he is. So take it away, Zach.
My name is Zachary Wyatt. I’m twenty years old and a junior at the University of West Alabama. My home is the small town of Moundville, Alabama, where my mom, dad, and twin younger brothers reside. I have a constant backlog of fantasy and science fiction books to read, with some historical fiction and manga thrown into the mix. One of my favorite novels is Shōgun by James Clavell, followed so closely by Neal Stephenson’s Anathem that I’ve given up trying to choose an absolute favorite. Much like my taste in books, some of my favorite video games fall into the fantasy genre, including The Elder Scrolls and Dark Souls. While I don’t watch movies as much as I read or game, I do enjoy the occasional film, especially if it’s historical. My favorite type of music is metal. I like to write as a hobby, and it’s a goal of mine to be published one day. This goes without saying when I’m reading, but also whether I’m gaming, watching a movie, or listening to music, I especially enjoy paying close attention to the stories being told, looking for motifs and plot devices, so that I can learn by example and better my own stories.
I went to Hale County High School, and was a member of National Honor Society, editor of the literary magazine, and a member of the marching band. I played alto saxophone and continue to do so in UWA’s band. I was also a member of the Boy Scouts of America and managed to become an Eagle Scout. Before coming here, I attended community college, graduating with an Associate of Arts. I am continuing my education by working towards a Bachelors in Computer Information Systems, with a minor in history. History is my absolute favorite subject; sometimes the stories told are more interesting than any fiction could be. I find all facets of history interesting, but especially fascinating to me is the history of feudal Japan. I hope to visit there one day. My hobbies include writing, building and taking apart computers, and exploring nature. Taking long walks in the quiet of a forest is one of my favorite things. It evokes such a calm, peaceful feeling that can’t be found anywhere else.
I would have to say that the literary world is very important to me. Although my goal after college is to be a software programmer, I have a love for literature, and hope to be able to make a lasting contribution of my own one day. I joined the Sucarnochee Review so that I could continue to be involved with literature and allow others to make their mark on that world.
