I’m sure I’m not the only one, but I have this one bit of advice that I give whenever I can. That advice is: “When going to college, don’t try to figure out what to do with you life right away. Try out a lot of different things first and then see what you wouldn’t mind doing for the rest of your life.”
I found this out the hard way, by going through several weeks of stress after figuring out that the career I had decided on was not for me after all. I spoke to several different people about my dilemma, including someone who had a career that I was also interested in, elementary education, which would cause me to change my major.
As I began the second semester, I was looking into several careers, most notably book editor and elementary school teacher. I also began working at the Livingston Press, a book publishing press at UWA, as a proofreader. Working there sealed the deal for me. I was to become a book editor. Since then I have excitedly studied the world of publishing and editing, and edited fiction for others. I’m currently preparing to apply for some internships in New York.
It was through trial and error that I found a career that I was passionate about, so I encourage trial and error to all who are facing the same difficult decision that I was.
